City in the nature – A pattern for the City of Äänekoski
I created a pattern for the city of Äänekoski as my bachelors thesis. I also designed ways to use the pattern in the city branding and the environment. The goal was to bring joy to the residents of Äänekoski and make the city center look more pleasant.
During the process two surveys were carried out for the residents of the city. The aim of the survey was to participate residents to the design process and collect their opinions.
The products
The pattern has been used in different products. Since there hasn’t been any Äänekoski products for the residents before these products have been a success.
The pattern has also been used in the window decals of the offices of Äänekoski city.
I wanted to create a product for the pattern to represent Äänekoski. I didn’t want the product to be an ordinary marketing product. There are a lot of forests in Äänekoski and many residents have a summer cottage of their own so I thought rainboots would be a very practical product to represent the city.
It was important to get the shape of the boots and the pattern in balance. I added wavy shapes in the bottom to represent water and bring layers and liveliness to the shape.
I also created a concept of rainboots to showcase the pattern and to represent Äänekoski. There are a lot of forests in Äänekoski and many residents have a summer cottage of their own so rainboots would be a very practical product to represent the city.
